Meet John W. Scherer, CEO & Founder
of Video Professor, Inc.

You may be one of the 90 million people who has seen John W. Scherer, otherwise known as the “Video Professor”, on television. He appears as the “Video Professor” in Video Professor’s many commercials and on network news programs like FOX & Friends and ABC’s World News Now. John Scherer will be the first to tell you that he’s not an actor. The man behind Video Professor is a dedicated CEO, having spent his last 20 years building Video Professor into the industry’s leader for computer education. Over 8 million households now use his groundbreaking video lessons every day.

John W. Scherer was born in St. Charles, Illinois, and raised in Geneva, Illinois. He is a direct descendant of both John and Joseph Naper, founders of Naperville, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

John’s business philosophy is simple: “Show up, do the best job possible, and meet the customers’ needs.” This philosophy has served him well and has kept Video Professor growing even through the economic downturn of recent years. Unlike many companies that raised money from investors and then quickly squandered it, Video Professor is privately owned and was built on a solid foundation. “We worked from the bottom up,” he says. “We’re a real company. We make real money.”

John W. Scherer began as a computer manufacturer in the mid-80s, selling computers to local dealers. Video Professor was born when it became clear to him that the market was larger for teaching computer skills than it was for selling computers. At the time, no other company was providing the necessary computer training. Mr. Scherer appointed himself the “Video Professor” and set out to create comprehensive lessons to teach people how to use their PCs quickly and easily.

The core of Video Professor’s teaching initiative is providing home users as well as corporate professionals with valuable and user-friendly learning solutions for today’s most common software titles. Video Professor and John W. Scherer are dedicated to pioneering the future of computer education.

“Video Professor is proud to be America’s first choice for easy-to-use computer software tutorials. Our ‘What-You-See-Is-What-You-Do’ teaching method has taught millions of people—from stay-at-home moms and school kids to busy professionals—how to use their computers, and we look forward to continuing to provide the highest quality learning tools for all computer skill levels.”

John Scherer realizes that with success comes responsibility. He believes strongly in giving back to his community and country. Mr. Scherer and his Video Professor employees also believe that good corporate citizenship means much more than paying our taxes on time. Mr. Scherer has shared his Video Professor success by becoming involved in several charitable causes. He established a $500,000 scholarship fund for the Naperville Education Foundation in his parents’ hometown of Naperville, Illinois, setting up an annual athletic scholarship and educational scholarship for students at Naperville Central High School in honor of his parents, William and Jane Scherer.

John W. Scherer has also donated computers and learning software to a number of charitable organizations. His charitable missions include participation in the Chickasaw Nation Computer Literacy Project, an initiative to improve computer literacy among Native Americans, as well as the Salvation Army Giving Tree and the United States Peace Corps.
